Terms of Service

Last updated: 21 August 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and us for the Unmapped apps, our backend service, and the getunmapped.app website. By creating an account or using the app, you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not use Unmapped.

Unmapped is operated by Artem Viacheslavovych Grishin, based in London, United Kingdom. In these terms, "we", "us" and "our" mean that operator. "You" means the person using the service.

How we handle your data is set out in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

1. What Unmapped does

Unmapped covers the map in fog. You clear the fog by physically moving through the world with the app tracking your position. Nearby places appear as mystery markers and reveal their identity when you get close to them. The app records your progress, awards levels and achievements, and can show your standing among friends.

The app needs your device's location to work. Without location permission there is nothing for the product to do.

2. Who can use it

You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under 18, you need permission from a parent or guardian. In countries where the minimum age for consenting to data processing is higher than 13, that higher age applies to you.

You must also have the legal capacity to enter into this agreement and must not be barred from using the service under any applicable law or sanctions regime.

3. Your account

You sign in with Google, Apple, or Facebook. We do not issue passwords.

Keep access to your sign-in account secure. Anything done through your Unmapped account is treated as done by you. Tell us at support@getunmapped.app if you believe someone else has gained access.

One person, one account. Do not sell, rent, or transfer your account.

We assign your nickname automatically when the account is created. You may change it in your profile. Nicknames must not impersonate another person, contain slurs or sexual content, or promote anything illegal. We may change a nickname that breaks this rule and tell you afterwards.

4. Safety

Read this section. It matters more here than in most apps.

Watch where you are going. Unmapped rewards movement, and that creates a pull towards looking at your phone while walking, cycling, or driving. Do not do it. Stay aware of traffic, crossings, edges, water, weather, and other people.

Never interact with the app while driving. Set your route before you move. The app reveals the map from background location, so it does not need your attention while you travel.

Obey the law and respect property. Do not trespass, do not enter restricted, private, or dangerous areas, and do not cross borders or closed zones to reveal territory. Areas shown on the map are not necessarily areas you are allowed to enter.

Do not rely on Unmapped for navigation, safety, or emergencies. It is an entertainment product. Place data can be wrong, missing, or out of date, and GPS can be inaccurate. Use a proper navigation app and official sources for anything that matters.

Know your own limits. Exploring on foot or by bike carries physical risk. Judge your own health and the conditions before you go. You do that at your own risk.

You are solely responsible for your interactions with the physical world. We accept no liability if you are injured, cause property damage, or violate local laws while using the app.

5. Location tracking

Tracking runs only when you turn it on and only while the operating system grants the permission. You can revoke the permission at any time in your device settings, or delete your account to stop collection entirely.

If you allow background location, the app keeps revealing the map while it is off screen. This is optional and the app works without it.

Recording your position uses battery and, when syncing, mobile data. Those costs are yours. We do not reimburse data charges.

6. Free trial, subscriptions, and payment

Trial. New accounts get a free period measured from the moment the account is created, in wall clock time. Reminders to subscribe begin after 3 days. After 7 days the account moves to read-only mode.

Read-only mode. The app stays open. You keep everything you have already revealed, plus your statistics, achievements, and history. New tracking stops, so the map no longer reveals and no new distance, experience, or coverage accrues, until you subscribe.

Plans. Monthly and yearly subscriptions are offered. Both grant the same access. The price shown in the app is the store's own localised price and is the price that applies.

Billing. All purchases go through the Apple App Store or Google Play. We never receive your card details. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period, charged to the store account you bought them with, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends.

Cancelling. Cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings. Cancellation stops the next renewal. Access continues to the end of the period you have paid for. Uninstalling the app does not cancel a subscription.

Refunds. Apple and Google process refunds under their own policies, so send refund requests to them. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected by this clause. Where you have a legal right to a refund from us directly, contact support@getunmapped.app.

Price changes. We may change prices. Changes apply from the next renewal, and the app stores will notify you as their rules require. If you do not accept a new price, cancel before it takes effect.

Restoring purchases. Use "Restore purchases" in the app after reinstalling or switching devices, as long as you use the same store account.

7. Acceptable use

Do not:

If we find faked or automated movement, we may remove the affected progress, reset statistics, remove leaderboard placements, suspend the account, or close it. Serious or repeated abuse ends the account without refund.

8. Social features

Friends, invite codes, and leaderboards are optional. A public profile shows your nickname, level, statistics, and leaderboard position to other users. A private profile shows those only to you and to friends whose requests you accepted.

Your recorded track is never shown to other users under any setting.

Sharing an achievement or statistics card creates an image on your device that you choose whether to send. What you do with it after that is up to you.

9. Map and place data

Base map tiles, place data, descriptions, and photos come from third parties, including OpenStreetMap, OpenFreeMap, Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. That material stays under its own licence, and the app displays the required credit next to it. Some place descriptions are generated by us with the help of AI and are labelled as such in the app.

We do not warrant that any of this material is accurate, complete, or current. Treat a place description as background reading rather than fact.

10. Our rights and yours

The apps, the backend, the design, the fog rendering, the artwork, the name, and the logo belong to us or our licensors. We grant you a personal, limited, revocable, non-transferable licence to use the apps on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial use. Nothing else is granted.

Your content stays yours. That means your nickname, your profile settings, and anything you send us in support. You grant us the licence we need to store it, process it, and display it inside the service as the product requires. That licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for backups still in rotation and records we are legally required to keep.

If you send us feedback or a suggestion, we may use it without obligation or payment.

11. Changes to the service

Unmapped is under active development. We may add, change, or remove features, adjust the fog and progression rules, change which regions have place data, or set limits on use. Where a change materially reduces what a paid subscription gives you, we will tell you in advance and you may cancel.

We may run the service with planned or unplanned downtime. We do not guarantee uninterrupted availability.

12. Suspension and termination

You may stop at any time. Delete your account in Settings, or through the deletion page on our website if you have already uninstalled the app. Deleting your account removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy, and it is permanent. Cancel any active subscription separately with Apple or Google.

We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if we are required to by law, or if your use puts the service or other users at risk. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will warn you first and give you a chance to fix the problem. If we close your account without cause, we will refund the unused part of a current subscription period.

13. Disclaimers

The service is provided as it is and as available. To the extent the law permits, we exclude implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.

We do not warrant that fog reveal, distance, coverage percentages, or place data will be accurate, that tracking will capture every movement, or that the service will be free of errors or interruption. GPS accuracy depends on your device, your surroundings, and satellite conditions, all of which are outside our control.

Nothing here excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or under consumer protection legislation that applies to you.

14. Liability

Subject to the paragraph above, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of data, loss of profit, or loss arising from your inability to use the service.

We are not liable for injury, damage, loss, fine, or legal consequence arising from where you choose to go, how you travel, or how you behave while using the app. Section 4 sets out the standard we expect of you.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, our total liability to you is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or 50 GBP.

Consumers keep their statutory rights. If you use Unmapped for business purposes, this limit applies in full.

15. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your use of Unmapped, your violation of these terms, or your breach of any law or third-party right, including property and trespassing laws.

16. App store terms

You also accept the terms of the store you downloaded from.

For iOS, this agreement is between you and us, not with Apple, and Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for Unmapped. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price if applicable, and to the extent the law permits Apple has no other warranty obligation. We are responsible for handling claims relating to the app, including product liability, non-conformity with legal requirements, and consumer protection claims, and for any third-party claim that the app infringes intellectual property rights. You confirm you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as terrorist-supporting, and that you are not on any US Government restricted party list. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

17. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change is material, we will notify you in the app or by email before it takes effect, and we will update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Unmapped after that means you accept the new version. If you do not accept it, delete your account.

18. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.

If you are a consumer resident in the UK, EEA, or another country whose law gives you mandatory protections, you keep those protections and may bring proceedings in your own country's courts.

Contact us first at support@getunmapped.app. Most problems are quicker to solve that way.

19. General

If a clause is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force. Our not enforcing a term is not a waiver of it. You may not assign this agreement. We may assign it as part of a transfer of the business, and we will tell you if that happens. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between us about Unmapped.
